Slow Dance Records Unveils Latest Addition To Annual Compilation Series

Featuring the debut release from techno-psych quartet LIPWORMS.

Slow Dance Records, the influential indie label known for championing lo-fi, experimental, and alternative music, has just launched its highly anticipated 8th annual new music compilation, Slow Dance '23 (Yes this is named correctly - we thought it was 24 but we were wrong).

The compilation, set for full digital release on 6th February 2024, is being rolled out in a series of weekly single releases throughout January. The first instalment includes tracks from artists such as Hornet, Lost Lyra, and the debut release from the techno-psych quartet LIPWORMS.

LIPWORMS, formed in Portsmouth last summer, showcase club-ready techno rhythms and psychedelic hypnosis. The track 'Handshake,' accompanied by a visually striking music video shot in a bleak civic centre in Portsmouth, showcases the band's ability to merge electro-industrial themes with a raw, spontaneous energy.

Chris Williamson, vocalist and guitarist for LIPWORMS, described the track's origins: "“Handshake started out as a noisy 15 minute live jam. Disjointed acid house with guitar noise and distorted screams over the top. It still is, in a way, but condensing the song down helped us find the right balance. We like to think of it as the sound of the internet screaming.”

The Slow Dance '24 compilation, spanning 18 tracks, promises a diverse range of sounds from established live-circuit mainstays like Cuckoo Spit, Plutoz Beach, and Hank to newcomers like Velvetine and Jesus and The Zealots. The compilation continues the tradition of featuring bedroom recordings, capturing the essence of the alternative music scene.

Over the years, Slow Dance Records' annual compilations have served as a barometer for emerging talent, with previous participants going on to sign and release with labels such as Ninja Tune, So Young, 4AD, and Rough Trade. Notable alumni include black midi, Black Country, New Road, Otta, Goat Girl, Martha Skye Murphy, Drug Store Romeos, Sorry, and Folly Group.

The Slow Dance '24 compilation is the label's longest and most ambitious edition to date.
