Squid Announce New Album ‘O Monolith’
Squid share details of their much anticipated second album and lead single ‘Swing (In A Dream)’.
After their top 5 charting debut Bright Green Field, Squid have returned with their second album, O Monolith. Out June 9th via Warp Records, the album has been produced by long-time collaborator Dan Carey and mixed by John McEntire of Tortoise.
O Monolith is a musical evocation of environment, domesticity and self-made folklore, combining melodic epiphanies with a winding, questioning nature. The album is dense and tricksy, but also warmer and more inviting than its predecessor. As a result, the band has earned praise as one of the most innovative new bands to come out of the UK.
Just two weeks after the release of Bright Green Field, Squid began work on their second album, O Monolith. Touring to socially-distanced, fully-seated shows allowed them to try out in-progress music, and in rehearsal rooms around Bristol, the album began to take shape. To explore their sound further, the band moved to Peter Gabriel's luxurious Real World studios in Wiltshire.
The environment around the studio had a huge influence on the album's sound, from the West Country connection of every band member to elements of British folk music, including field recordings from the area. Contributors Martha Skye Murphy and Roger Bolton, who maintains the Fairlight samplers, added unique textures, as did vocal ensemble Shards.
Expansive and varied, O Monolith reflects the band's restless spirit and enigmatic nature. Vast and strange, the album is alive with endless interpretations of its mysteries. It's a testament to the band's progress, a testament to their stubbornness, and a testament to their creativity.
To give fans the opportunity to experience their raw best, Squid are embarking on their most ambitious tour yet. Having already sold out their underplay at Scala in a matter of minutes, they are announcing their largest ever headline shows, including Troxy in London. Those who pre-order the album by midday on Monday 13th February via the band's website will get first access to tickets, with general sale beginning on 16th February at 10am.
