Start Listening To: Low Girl

Low Girl is set to release new EP, UH-OH, on January 6th.

Low Girl is the work of multi-instrumentalist Sarah Cosgrove and her bandmates Toby Morgan, Tom Cosgrove and Bradley Taylor. The band released their debut EP, Big Now, in May 2021 and haven’t looked back since. The EP was preceded by the release of the title track, which drew support from DIY, The Line of Best Fit, BBC Radio 1, Radio X and was playlisted on BBC 6 Music. The same year saw them sell out a debut headline show at London's The Lexington and appear at BBC Introducing Reading & Leeds, really cementing the live sound of a band coming of age.

Having already shared the infectious guitar-driven 'Knees' from their forthcoming EP UH-OH, the band just released new single ‘Uh-Oh.’ Watch below! We caught up with Sarah for a chat on all things Low Girl.

Can you tell us who you are, where you’re from, and something about the music you make?

Hello, hello, I’m Sarah from Low Girl. I’m from sunny Hemel Hempstead, and I make music that is almost exclusively about my big feelings. Our tracks have been described as ‘Sad Bangers’, although I’m not sure if that’s a good thing!

How did you guys meet, and how did it all start?

I met my brother Tom (drums) when I was born. I then met Toby (keys) at uni when we were randomly assigned to each other as flatmates. Tom met Brad (bass) on a night out and then brought him to one of my infamous house parties. I’d been writing songs by myself for a long time, but eventually, the boys found a way to convince me to give up ‘Total Creative Control’, and we made a band.

We love your new single, ‘Knees’. Can you tell us a bit more about how this single came about?

I was in a relationship that was in that stage where it was over, but no one would say it out loud. There was a lot of pressure at the time from work and rent - really it was all getting a bit much. My now ex-girlfriend wanted me to give up pursuing music and put an end date on it, but it’s such an important and healthy coping mechanism for me - I just couldn’t do that. The song was kind of me saying, hey, maybe we can both do what we want to do, but there’s a bittersweet element of knowing that really these things can’t be achieved together.

We love the video too! How did the idea come about?

It’s convenient for me to say I came up with the initial concept because it’s ME answering these questions, isn’t it? But I did! Then I brainstormed it with the boys, and Tom, in particular, came up with some very funny ideas.

How do you produce your music?

The way it tends to work at the moment is I will write a song and show it to the boys. We then jam along to the idea for a bit and record a more focused demo. To be über frugal, we try and record as much of it as we can at home. But, painfully aware of our limitations, we go to the studio for drums, vocals and guitars.

What inspires your music?

I feel really inspired by an abundance of other artists like Mitski, Adrianne Lenker, Julian Casablancas etc. But for the most part, I’m just inspired by the events happening in my own life. When enough time passes, it’s interesting to perform and, in turn, re-navigate those times in my life through these bookmark-like songs.

What advice would you give anyone trying to achieve a similar sound to you?

I’d say try and use melodies to tell as much of a story as you’re telling with the lyrics. That’s always my goal, so maybe it should be yours too!

Name an album you’re still listening to from when you were younger and why it’s important to you.

I’m gonna go with Favourite Worst Nightmare by Arctic Monkeys. I associate it DEEPLY with Shaun White Snowboarding (entirely because I was listening to that album a lot while playing Shaun White Snowboarding). But really, it’s still very relevant and timeless, and I always love a balance between sad songs and hard-hitting bangers.

Do you have any recurring dreams?

I do have a recurring dream where I’m in one of those KidZone soft-play places, walking across a bridge. Do with that what you will…

What do you hate right now?

What a strong word! But if you insist, I really hate having to do the washing up at the moment. I used to feel indifferent to it, but out of that indifference has grown a deep resentment.

What do you love right now?

I really genuinely have begun to love going to gigs. I know that sounds like it would be an obvious thing for a musician to enjoy, but I used to avoid it because I’d always end up comparing and getting down on myself. It’s very cool to have moved past that and be able to just connect with what’s happening and get a bit lost in it.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?

The BME stage at Austin for SXSW! We were so happy with that show - even our manager was happy with that show!

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?

We recently went on tour with October Drift, and seeing them on that last night at the Cavern in Exeter is definitely the best I’ve seen. I got really choked up.

What comes next in the Low Girl story?

I can’t quite express how much there is that we want to share with people. I never really know what’s around the corner, but the music is always here, it's just how we find ways to share it. I’m never gonna stop because even measly old rehearsals are the highlight of my week.

What upcoming 2022 music releases are you most excited about?

I’m sure King Gizzard will release another ten albums next month, and I’m sure we’ll love each and every one.

Is there any new music from 2022 you have been enjoying?

Jockstrap’s debut album has been on repeat, and we all collectively rinsed Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You by Big Thief.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Toby failed his Driving Theory Test, so he’s a bit fragile at the moment. If you see him, go easy on him.
