For those unfamiliar with your music, can you tell us who you are, where you’re from and about the music you make?
We are L’objectif, from the city of Leeds and i suppose the music we make is alternative and that includes alternative anything really, it’s too boring staying around one sound and genre so we just do whatever excites us at the time. We’ve been described as everything from gloom punk to straight pop so we’re not too sure. First and foremost though we are a band, so it is often guitar orientated music.
Congratulations on the upcoming release of your EP The Left Side. Can you share some insights into the creative process behind this new body of work?
Thank you, it’s exciting! The songs have all been revisited and re-done and worked on for quite a while, we always had faith in the potential of the music but it wasn’t all lining up till the very end. I think the space between our last release helped us deKine what we needed to do for the next project. Some songs fell out of the sky and were recorded in my bedroom in the space of 2 days and others weren’t Kinished till 3 years later, i think that really sums us up to be honest.
'Puppy' is the latest single from the EP. Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind the song and its title?
The song in my mind was supposed to be this brooding soundtrack to quite a dark coming of age Kilm about the pitfalls of love and youth. Of course then i had to ruin that pretentiousness and sing about puppy eyes and decide the video should be about tiny little puppies. I love it to be honest, i wanted to make a pop song and it’s almost one so that’ll do.
The music video for 'Puppy' features actual puppies, which sounds delightful. What was the concept behind incorporating dogs into the video, and how was the experience Kilming with them?
My original idea was to contrast the puppies with the band as the animal liberation front, that turned out to be a bit difKicult to plan so we ran with a variation of that idea. We worked with ethan porter who managed to make it come to life and we’re really happy with it, especially because we got to meet perfect tiny dogs and call it work.
Your previous single 'ITSA' received significant attention. How does 'Puppy' differ from your previous releases, and what can fans expect from the overall sound of The Left Side?
Puppy is more of an indie pop song i guess and ITSA is more 90s inspired definitely, i’m proud of the production of both these songs and they turned out almost exactly how i imagined them to, which is the most rewarding thing to happen as a songwriter. The left side, as a whole, contrasts a lot throughout, but if listened to from start to finish there is an inherent cohesiveness that maybe our other eps didn’t have. It’s the biggest project in length that we have and it’s the biggest sounding in my humble opinion.
Saul, you're credited as the frontman and producer. Can you elaborate on your role in shaping the sound and themes of the new EP?
Producing is my favourite thing about curating a project, it’s a difficult skill that i’m still learning, i realised however that no other person apart from my self could realise what i have in my head and make it (almost) exactly how i imagined it to sound. It can be really frustrating as patience is needed in the production process and i struggle with that. I suppose the frontman credits i can claim are looking like a fool and flailing my arms about whilst doing vocal takes.
The Left Side signifies the end of a section in your lives, according to Saul. How has your sound evolved, and what can listeners expect in terms of musical exploration on this EP?
Our sound has hopefully matured, i don’t think the approach towards the music is different in this project but i think it’s more precise and considered. Musical exploration wise i think we go from post punk to pop and out the other end, i’m not sure exactly i guess you’ll all have to find out…
The EP includes a track titled 'What A Time To Be Alive.' Can you share the story or inspiration behind this particular song?
Absolute banger.
I cant tell you how bad this song sounded for so long but we didn’t give up because it had its own charm. It took ages to get right whilst predicting it but when it was finished i think it was an instant favourite for the whole band and we’ve been playing it live for a long time even when we knew it wouldn’t come out for ages just because it is so fun to play. The inspiration is all about existential dread which isn’t so fun, i always find a way to make things depressing.
What can fans expect from your live performances, and do you have any memorable moments from your previous shows?
They can expect a very good band, i’m proud to say that because we have been improving the overall performance and theatre of our show for quite a while and we’re ready to take it all on. There are countless memories from our shows every time we play, it never gets forgotten or taken for granted, there is honestly to many but it’s often the people watching that make it memorable.
What do you love right now?
Making music.
What do you hate right now?
Social media, too addictive.
Name an album you’re still listening to from when you were younger and why it’s still important to you?
The stone roses debut album, it’s just magic and is still inspiring to me. It has everything i love about a record.
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals for the future, both in terms of your musical journey and personal growth as a band?
We will make an album, that is the plan. Then we will make more and hopefully get to play in front of some wonderful people and do that forever and love the whole thing.
