Start Listening To: Hannya White

Hannya White's world is filled with layered soundscapes, flickering images, and a dance between darkness and light, reminiscent of a cinematographic experience.

In the realm of avant-garde music, where futuristic soundscapes meet mystical undertones, lies Hannya White, the musical enigma from south-east London. Her second EP I Call You Another Name is a mesmerising journey into the depths of creativity and human experience. Hannya's music defies conventional boundaries and takes listeners on an otherworldly voyage. It's not merely a collection of songs but an exploration of emotions and the intricacies of love and longing.

For those unfamiliar with your music, can you tell us who you are, where you’re from and about the music you make?

Hi I am Hannya, based in south east London sometimes I am from Saturn, sometimes I come from the tree forest fog nebula. A strong picture evolved and so blurred. Sometimes I think, it’s an interesting question, to know where you are from because I won’t remeber the first time of my live. My music, a collection, sounds, noise, moments, long time memories in shortcut, in a 3-minute song.

I Call You Another Name is your highly anticipated second EP. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the EP and the themes you explore through its tracks?

I call you another name is about playing someone else, being someone else. A game you can play with another person.  And the meaning of a word game, it can be good or bad, to call somebody names, or invent a new name for someone, especially if you love someone in friendship, partnership. “I call you, tonight”, this track is a glimpse into the intricate dynamics of reaching out to someone, particularly during the night-time when the world is cloaked in darkness. The title itself suggests a sense of urgency and longing, hinting at the desire to connect or share something with someone special. Sometimes to take another name is also to have some kind of disguise. Like on a demonstration you might take another name, or as an artist, band or like for different roles in life. So for me every track has a clear vision. Roam, roam, roam.

Your music is described as a blend of avant-garde, futuristic soundscapes, and mystical undertones. How do these elements play a role in creating the sonic world of I Call You Another Name?

Putting together tearing, puzzle, refurbish. Always collecting. Till there is enough collected, it will spill over. It’s soundscapes, layered sounds drift in and out, riding through, short flickering, images appearing, a short feeling appears of love and longing for love and being lost. Flashlight on. Off. On. Off….

The first track ‘Roam, Roam, Roam’ sets the tone for the EP. Could you delve into the complexities of love and longing that this track explores?

Damn, love, well, love yourself. Right. Too far to love me, too far to hold me. Please love me.

‘I Call You Tonight’ is a key track on the EP, and it’s described as being about playing someone else, being someone else. Can you elaborate on the concept behind this song and what you aim to convey to listeners?

Too much thinking is not good for economy. A fairy tale world.

I Call You Another Name is described as more than just a collection of songs; it’s an exploration of emotions and boundaries. Could you expand on how your music serves as a means to explore these aspects of human experience?

I think everyone perceives the surroundings different. Visiting in the music, grey spaces that are rarely visited, places we can’t really understand. We can see the same thing but will absorb it in a different way. Also handling things, we do different. Feelings are different. You can be ina really fucked up situation, and still the person next to you will make it easier for you or not. How we handle and respond to life's challenges can be highly individual. Some may find solace or resilience in the face of adversity, while others might struggle. The presence and support of others can make a significant difference in how we navigate difficult situations.

The ebb and flow of life, with moments of feeling lost and found constantly lost and found and lost and found in this place. And great experience to share with the people around you too, which are just worthwhile for sharing, but somehow sometimes so very dramatic. Well, most of us are ‘From another world, my love’.

As an artist, what message or emotions do you aim to convey through your music, and what do you hope your listeners take away from your work?

A dream, a dream.

Name an album you’re still listening to from when you were younger and why it’s still important to you?

Portishead the Album ‘Third’ why, it’s important for me? It’s just pure energy for me a total piece to get soaked into.

What do you love right now?

What I love right now? Haha, just because of the previous question, listening to ‘Third’ by Portishead.

But else I love is the current music which is evolving in London. Acts like Body Horror, Nexus 0, Fat Concubine, Ebb, Kuntessa , Nuha Ruby Ra and Black Fondu. Like more beat electronic noise punk and edgy, I love. Like tonight, there is a gig at the Windmill Brixton and Maria Uzor is playing.

What do you hate right now?

Can’t recall I ever hated something. Maybe more deepen upset about situations in the world.

As you continue to evolve as an artist, what are your long-term aspirations and goals, and what do you hope to achieve through your music in the years to come?

What I really would love to, is being in a cinema watching a movie and my music is included, or better go to a film Festival and watch it there.
