Start Listening To: EGGY

Flightless Records latest signing EGGY bring the quirky and weird to the already kaleidoscopic Australian psych scene.

Can you tell us who you are, where you’re from and about the music you make?

Eggy are Charlie Wolstenholme, Dom Moore, Lucy Packham, Sam Lyons and Zoe Monk. We live in Melbourne and we try to make music like the Beatles did.

How did EGGY form?

We formed to play a Halloween party in 2016 at Luce’s house. We played 5 covers and none of us were gutsy enough to sing at that point so they were mostly instrumental or with friends screaming into the mic. All of the amps were connected to one powerpoint which someone kept accidentally kicking out mid song. We’ve channeled this energy ever since!

Where did you get your name?

We will take that to the grave.

How are you feeling about the release of your new album?

Real excited!  Champagne and oysters are imminent.

Can you tell us more about the themes behind this record?

There are a few overarching themes of grandeur and opulence with this record, both lyrically and instrumentally. We wanted to make something that was more cohesive, with songs and themes that blend into each other and intersect. It’s meant to be a bit of a winding journey that takes you out of the banality of the everyday for a little slice of time. That was the intention anyway!

How do you produce your music?

A lot of the time it starts with a demo that one of us brings to the band to expand on. We have a google drive that has a whole heap of ideas in it - some pretty simple and some more fleshed out. There’s a bit of an Eggy ethos that anything goes musically, which makes sifting through the demos fun. There’s everything from piano ballads to instrumental synth stuff in there. Some of it  sounds like it belongs on a Nintendo 64 game (album three?). The kernel for this record was listening to all of these ideas and starting to think about how we could stitch them together like a tapestry or something. It was real fun.

What’s it like working with Flightless Records?

10/10. We love the label and everyone involved - we’re a big family which has added to the whole experience.   Benny Jones (creative director)  did such a stellar  job with the album art- he nailed the surreal grandness we were going for.  A lot of us also play in a tennis team together which we maybe take more seriously than putting out music.

Can you share something interesting about the band that has nothing to do with music?

We’re all sports nuts. Tennis, basketball, footy - if there’s a ball involved there’s normally an Eggy member involved.

What do you love right now?

Free pastries & the new Nathan Fielder show “The Rehearsal”.

What do you hate right now?

People that go up and check the mark on the clay court to determine whether the ball was in or out. Call it as you see it!

Name an album you’re still listening to from when you were younger and why it’s important to you?

Rowland S Howard - Teenage Snuff Film. I got given the cd for my 16th birthday and it’s still one of the most incredible records I’ve ever heard. It opened me up to the idea that one note can change the world!

Is there any new music from 2022 you have been enjoying?

Heaps! Everything from Kamikaze Palm Tree, Delivery, Mug, Dry Cleaning, Pys Melyn.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

We’re a bit concerned Choz our drummer is not human..
