Start Listening To: Jiordy

We shared some time in conversation with Jiordy. Having talked singles, songwriting, and sushi, we feel we’ve learned a little about her vision for this musical project and the one behind it.

For those unfamiliar with your music, can you tell us who you are, where you’re from, and a little bit about the music that you make?

Hello, I’m Jiordy. I live in Thornbury (Naarm/Melbourne) with my Fiancé and our beautiful dog Bentley. I make music that’s a little electronic, ambient and shimmery. I like floaty, feel-good melodies, smoky vocals, gritty synths and nostalgic beats.

What is your songwriting process like?

Always different. Sometimes I write lyrics first, other times I come up with a melody. I have hundreds of dodgy voice notes on my phone with random bits and pieces. I come up with ideas at very unusual times – I think it might have something to do with my subconscious and not thinking too hard.

Can you tell us about what went into your new single, ‘Hard to Say’?

With music, it’s not until I can write about something that I can process it and let it go, and that's what ‘Hard To Say’ is for me. It’s about being raw and honest, about healing and self-acceptance. When I feel brave enough to sort through my past, I end up writing it in my music or lyrics. ‘Hard To Say’ is me processing my past and moving on.

Would you say there are any key themes behind your upcoming EP?

A Sprig of Wattle celebrates some pivotal times of learning in my life. It’s about coming home and being at a point where I feel incredibly grateful for all my life experiences and journeys. Wattle is my favourite winter flower and it’s very lucky for me. Wattle has weirdly pointed me in some really wonderful directions too so I thought it was the perfect title. The tracks all offer something slightly different but expect for them to follow on from ‘Hard to Say’.

If you had free rein to take your music in a new unexplored direction, would you? If so, how would you use that chance for exploration?

Since I started releasing music, I’ve thought it’s important to show some versatility. I have explored different genres and sounds with ‘Vigor’ and ‘Weight in Water’ and am keen to keep things interesting. Could I come out with a disco single? Never say never.

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?

I love Four Tet, Lykke Li, Julia Jacklin, Rhye, Lana Del Rey, Julia Stone, Phoebe Bridgers, Angie McMahon and The XX.

What do you hate most right now?

Hmmm, I hate sushi. (I know people will hate me for this haha but I just do not love it!)

What do you love most right now?

Home and my little family.

What can we expect from your upcoming A Sprig of Wattle EP?

I’m very introspective. I think a lot. So - you should expect some deeper meanings, reflective lyrics, ambient synths, gutsy guitars, laid back drums and lots of harmonies.

Now that things are easing up around the world, do you have plans for any live shows?

Yes! I’m currently getting my live show together for after the EP release. I will be doing an EP launch but all those details are still to come. I started releasing music in the midst of COVID so it’s been a little tricky with live shows so far but I am incredibly excited to start gigging.

What else is in the works for Jiordy?

Honestly, I just want to play live shows for people. After the EP is out, it’s something I will be able to focus on 100%. There are a lot of different people I want to work with, artists I would love to support, places I would love to tour but I’m all for living in the present so I’m just seeing how things flow.
