In this short and sweet interview, we gain some insights into what goes into this Brooklyn-based five-piece: their process, their origins, and their double single.

For those unfamiliar with your music, can you tell us who you are, where you’re from, and a little bit about the music that you make?

We’re in Brooklyn with members originally from a band in Texas. We write for the stage mostly but we don’t like to think too much about what it is that we do. We just want to make the music that we wish we were hearing at shows in NYC.

What is your songwriting process like?

We start with a single idea on an instrument or a theme and work with it through the course of an 8 hour day. If we don’t have most of the song figured out by the time we’re done for the day we’ll typically scrap it and move on the next day. If something works we’ll keep building on it later but we find a lot of beauty in allowing the song to grow without being fragmented so early on.

Can you tell us about what went into your new double single, featuring ‘Only Advice’ and ‘Fallen Stones’?

To build on the point from the previous question, ‘Fallen Stones’ was very much one of those songs that started with a guitar part and was finished within 3 hours of starting it. ‘Only Advice’ is a good counterpart to that because we’ve been sitting on that idea since we first moved to Brooklyn, and kept building on it for a few months until we recorded the demos with the rest of the group.

We take it you’re excited to get back on the road for your upcoming US tour? Any particular venues you’re keen to play?

The Ottobar is one we’re excited to go back to. Also, the house shows we have on the tour; those are always great. I know both bands are big fans of Protomartyr so we’re thrilled to be playing Jumbo’s.

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?

The Fall, Sonic Youth, Keiji Haino… everyone loves Nick Cave and Rowland S. Howard. Jonathan Fire*Eater.

Which releases from this year have you been listening to?

Drunk Tank Pink was good. Nothing else from this year really. Tons of stuff from last year was good.

What do you hate most right now?

Bus Fare.

What do you love most right now?

Gold Sounds. Oh! and bleach. We got a tushy too that was pretty cool.

Now that things are easing up around the world, do you have any plans for live shows on a more international level?

Oh yes.

What else can we expect from Catcher in 2021?

Album.
