Trainfantome - Thirst Review
Trainfantome’s second album is a taut and introspective release that celebrates the artistic value of unconventional recordings.
Trainfantome, 'Ghost Train' in English, evoke mystery and angst in equal measures throughout their second album ‘Thirst’. Taking inspiration from greats of distorted dark slowcore, influences of Duster, Deftones and Eliot Smith permeate deep into the misty surroundings of emotive haze. Synth melodies counteract crunchy basslines and dreamy guitar. Sharp and nonchalant vocals sit snugly into the mix, providing emotive clarity. Distorted lead lines wail through songs as the tracklist moves into unexpected territories. Weaving between uptempo gloomy rock and crushing soundscapes, Trainfantome utilises sonic variation to craft a powerful release.
Outlying tracks like 'Adulthood' indulge in deep droning bass synth to create a murky atmosphere. Punctuated by low fidelity drum samples, these imperfections add dramatically to the character of the recording. Vocals sit deep inside the mix; struggling to emerge beneath a bed of reverberating sounds. 'Adulthood' manages to conjure an impossibly stark atmosphere akin to the work of Have a Nice Life or Black Marble. This brooding soundscape is continued into the next track 'Tunnel Vision' which implements intimate guitar into the mix. Drums ramp into the track before sharp bass and distortion flow with new energy.
'Spin', the final single from the album, implements finger-picked hooky guitar lines that are quickly lost in a crash of sound. Saccharine vocals harmonise throughout the verse until building and sharply falling in the extended bridge. A warped chorus concludes the track and cascades into the charged silence that infests the space between ‘Thirst’s’ tracklist.
Trainfantome have effectively built upon the lo-fi emotive rock of their previous release ‘Mature Immature’. 'Thirst' creates tension with creative implementation of an isolating sonic atmosphere and passionate performance provides unmatched energy throughout the record. Trainfantome’s second album is a taut and introspective release that celebrates the artistic value of unconventional recordings.
