Viji Unveils Debut Album ‘So Vanilla’

Releases captivating lead single ‘Sedative’.

London-based Austrian-Brazilian artist Viji has announced her highly-anticipated debut album So Vanilla. Adding to the excitement, Viji has also shared a hypnotic music video for her hook-heavy, fuzz-laden new single ‘Sedative’. The album is scheduled for release on October 27th, courtesy of renowned London label Speedy Wunderground.

Drawing inspiration from the easy, sleazy sounds of the 90s, Viji, whose real name is Vanilla Jenner, has been steadily establishing herself as one of the most thrilling alternative artists in the UK. Previously releasing music on Dirty Hit, she recently signed to Speedy Wunderground.

So Vanilla was predominantly recorded in London, in collaboration with acclaimed producer Dan Carey, the four-time Mercury Prize nominee and head of Speedy Wunderground. Reflecting on the album's creation, Viji shares that each song underwent a unique writing process, with some tracks born from extended guitar sessions where sounds melded seamlessly, while others emerged from late-night introspections at home.

Merging intricately woven guitar melodies, contagious pop hooks, and heartfelt soliloquies, Viji's latest single ‘Sedative’ serves as a captivating introduction to So Vanilla. Commenting on the track, Viji reveals “I wrote Sedative about a girl. She’s like a breath of fresh air, and there’s a fine line between friendship and attraction that was hard to navigate. Usually when I meet someone like that I wanna ‘be’ that person, but this time I wanted to be with her.”

Accompanying the single is a surreal and visually striking music video directed by Gilbert Trejo. Viji explains that the scenes in the video unlock the dreamworld inside her head while being confined in a padded room, delivering a visual experience that includes an homage to "The Shining" with a set of twins.

To celebrate the release of her new album, Viji will grace audiences with a series of in-store events and live performances, including a headline show at The Shacklewell Arms in London, her first since her sold-out performance at Third Man Records in March, where she previewed material from the forthcoming record.
