Hype List: 24 New Artists To Watch In 2024
Drop what you’re doing, do yourself a favour, and check out these artists before your buddy beats you to it.
Well it’s the end of the year and it’s been a great one for new artists. This year, we’ve watched a few incendiary new artists go from playing tiny venues to playing huge festivals and even winning brit awards almost over night (cough cough TLDP). A lot of these artists were in our 2023 Hype List so yeah we’re feeling pretty forward thinking, aren’t we so great. Anyway, here’s the list for 2024: We’re sure some of these artists will go on to much greater things in the New Year and inevitably outgrow the scenes they were part of and stop responding to our emails about gig bookings.
Big Special
Emerging from the Black Country in the Midlands, Big Special make a powerful statement. Comprising Joe Hicklin as the singer and Callum Moloney on drums, this dynamic two-piece brings a visceral assault to the music scene, blending skullcrusching guitars, head-wobbling synths, and face-belting drums. 'SHITHOUSE' offers a darkly humorous commentary on personal mental struggles amid societal depression and anxiety. Hicklin describes it as a reflection on rough times, both observed from the outside and lived from the inside, where, despite our efforts, everything seems to end up in a shithouse.
Borough Council
Three-piece Borough Council released their debut single ‘Prescribed’ on Bath House Records in mid-2023 (recorded at Bath House Studio, Sydenham; an old Victorian bath house which was previously owned by Lewisham Borough Council). Hailing from Hastings brothers Haydn and Joe Ackerley, along with longtime friend Tom Healey, have developed and aroused a cult following with their intense live shows, minimally released records, outside demos, and side projects. One to watch in the coming months.
Dream Phone
Dream Phone emerges as a dynamic force that blends glitch-pop and punk rock influences into an explosion of blistering, bonkers, and brilliant off-kilter pop. Their self-titled debut EP, characterised by auto-tuned vocals, electronic beats, and humour-laden lyrics, reflects the band's commitment to crafting catchy tunes housed within a strange, digital structure. Infusing 90s nostalgia and pop culture references into DIY videos like ‘Bad Girls’ and ‘No’ Dream Phone presents a lighthearted and refreshing approach to music, steering away from the seriousness that often permeates the scene. With comparisons to artists like 100 gecs, Le Tigre, and the B-52s, Dream Phone's energetic live performances promise a whirlwind of excitement.
Eunuchs
Breaking away from the prevailing musical landscape in Australia dominated by psychedelic rock and pub punk, Eunuchs emerges as a breath of fresh air on the music scene. Drawing inspiration from a blend of Black Midi, Emo and crooning, the band crafts a distinctive fusion that challenges genre norms and delivers an emotive and powerful resonance. Their upcoming sophomore album Harbour Century envisioned as a sonic emblem of Sydney, weaves tales of lies, scams, and maritime mishaps, offering a melodic chronicle of the city's essence. With maximalist compositions and 17-minute-long tracks, Eunuchs embraces ambition, conveying both ambiguity and grandeur in their dense musical tapestry.
Flytrap
Comprising the formidable lineup of Alex, Arthur, Hasan, Ollie, and Dobbs, this dynamic quintet has taken the London music scene by storm, leaving a trail of exhilarated crowds in their wake throughout the year. Despite their youth, this ferocious five-piece demonstrates a stage presence that is electric, captivating audiences with their infectious energy. Anticipate an explosive debut single set to release in 2024, promising a cacophony of furious guitars, harmonicas, saxophones, violins, and anything else that adds to the riotous sound they're known for.
Friko
Friko, are drummer Bailey Minzenberger and vocalist/guitarist Niko Kapetan. Hailed as a vital new contribution to Chicago's illustrious history of avant-garde indie music. After forming in 2019, Friko quickly started playing at storied Chicago locations including Schubas Tavern, the Metro, and Empty Bottle,turning each of their songs into a moment of group catharsis. In 2022, they self-released their critically acclaimed debut EP, Whenever Forever, and the following spring, they made their festival debut at Bonnaroo. The band’s debut Where we've been, Where we go from here, due out at the beginning of this year, is a DIY project finished prior to Friko's signing to ATO. Primarily recorded live at their producer Scott Tallarida's Trigger Chicago studio. Where we've been, Where we go from here has a sonic complexity appropriate for a band that lists art-rock's more raw edges and classical music from the Romantic era as influences.
Frozemode
Originating from the vibrant streets of London, Frozemode asserts its dominance as a commanding presence in the British Hip-Hop scene. The trio, consisting of Cho Hollo, I.V. GATLIN, and Lisong, has captivated audiences with their electrifying and uninhibited musical style. With an unapologetic attitude and boundless energy, Frozemode's alternative rap takes center stage, marked by its dynamic and impulsive nature. What sets Frozemode apart is their infusion of punk influences, adding an edgy and rebellious flair to their sonic palette. This fusion creates a distinctive sound that not only defies conventions but also pushes the boundaries of the genre. As they navigate the bustling cultural landscape of London, Frozemode emerges as a musical force, unafraid to break free from the norm and make an indelible mark on the British Hip-Hop scene.
Funhaus
Step into the resurgent world of Funhaus, where adversity has fuelled unparalleled intensity. Emerging from a tumultuous year marked by the loss of two members, the band draws inspiration from the big-hitting rock of the '90s, channeling commanding vocals reminiscent of The Fall, and infusing a touch of psych punk akin to King Gizzard. With their debut single, 'Seen Vulture' recorded at the prestigious Church Studios, Funhaus is poised to reshape London's thriving DIY music scene. The track promises a thunderous sound, injecting a much-needed dose of raw ferocity.
Gglum
Dive into the dynamic universe of gglum, the artistic moniker of London-born songwriter Ella Smoker. With the release of her second single ‘Easy Fun’ under Secretly Canadian, gglum brings an industrial, riotous vibe that encapsulates every night out since her teenage years. The track, offers a departure from her usual gloomy topics, maintaining a silly and tongue-in-cheek essence. Having previously garnered attention with ‘SPLAT!’ gglum's catchy and noisy blend of emo-inspired garage rock is something not to be missed. At 21, gglum navigates a tumultuous coming-of-age with versatility and lo-fi charm.
King Isis
King Isis, who was born and raised in the city of Oakland, California, blends sounds and forms from jazz and blues to rock and R&B, expressing suffering, development, and metamorphosis. King Isis has bone fide musical credentials. Their great-great-grandmother Omega King, one of the first Black opera singers in Chicago, taught them on the piano. The moniker "King Isis" honours Omega's history of following her love of art and creating in a segregated, post-slavery America. Isis muses, “Her name holds a lot of power in my house and in my family,” Isis reflects, “A big part of the reason my artist name incorporates hers is to remind me that there is power in my voice, that music has always been a deep-rooted part of me, and to keep going.” King Isis aspires to keep bringing those who feel excluded and alone into the fluid world of their sounds because she believes in the therapeutic power of music.
KickBoy
Get to know KickBoy, the eclectic and adventurous band formed by Owen, Chris, Jules, Max, and Connie in Bristol and later reformed in London. Initially rooted in garage rock and skate punk, KickBoy has evolved into a unique blend of egg-punk and garage rock with influences of disco and funk. Their latest single ‘Vision Shakes’ explores themes of mental health and disorientation, offering a distinctive mix of spooky, 90s TV show-esque sounds with dark undertones. As part of a series of five tracks, the EP promises a genre-defying experience, characterised by chilling synths, dissonant saxophones, and unpredictable shifts.
Ladylike
Discover the enchanting sound of Ladylike as they gracefully navigate the delicate balance between folk and post-rock. Hailing from Brighton, this quartet has made a name for themselves in the city’s vibrant live music scene, sharing stages with the likes of Divorce, Blood Wizard and The Paranoyds. Recently they shared their debut single ‘Southbound’ a single that paints a vivid picture of life in all its mundane glory. Intriguingly reminiscent of the cooler edges of Big Thief’s music, Ladylike bring a fresh perspective to the folk and post-rock genres, crafting music that is both evocative and entrancing.
Man/Woman/Chainsaw
Man/Woman/Chainsaw have had an interesting journey so far. Initially a three-piece ensemble, they have meticulously crafted their sound. In the relatively brief span of their live performances, the group has gracefully evolved, thanks to the collaborative efforts of close companions who introduced horns, strings, and backing vocals into the mix, resulting in a sublime cacophony of sound. Drawing occasional comparisons to the likes of Black Country, New Road, Man/Woman/Chainsaw has transcended mere imitation, cultivating distinctive and compelling music. Their live shows have witnessed a continuous refinement, solidifying their status as one of the most accomplished acts in the current London music scene. Take note, as Man/Woman/Chainsaw is undoubtedly destined for remarkable musical heights.
Rats-Tails
Comprising Chris on lead guitar, Samuel on bass, Frankie D on clarinet, Pitt on drums, and the enchanting Courtney on vocals and guitar, the band creates a dreamlike spell that captivates audiences. Their recent sophomore single, 'Coke in the 70s,' not only serves as a chronicle of personal adversity but also stands as a transformative journey, narrated by Courtney's ethereal vocals. Rats-Tails finds catharsis and expression through their music, turning negative experiences into powerful anthems. With plans for an EP on the horizon, Rats-Tails invites fans to embark on a journey of enchantment and introspection.
Rose Droll
Step into the mesmerising realm of Rose Droll as she unveils her sophomore album, With Strangers. Following the genre-defying journey of her debut, Your Dog, Droll once again pushes the boundaries with a record that defies convention. Created in the vibrant cities of Oakland and Los Angeles, With Strangers demonstrates Droll's virtuosity across a diverse array of instruments, crafting an intricate tapestry of themes that delve into the profound complexities of the human experience. Exploring the birth and demise of romantic connections, the delicate dynamics of therapist-patient relationships, and the depths of depression and substance abuse, Droll's keen observations reinforce her status as an artist with eyes wide open to the intricacies of human connection.
Sailor Honeymoon
Together, photographer Abi Raymaker \인홏 and techno DJ Zaeeun Shin 신쐬은 formed "Sailor Honeymoon" during jam sessions in a practice space they shared with their friends. Their raucous, free-form improvisation was imbued with a furious punk chemistry, which in a nation where talent is carefully cultivated became a modest act of defiance. Word of mouth of their on stage antics — getting their female fans on stage and swapping instruments mid jam — has spread quickly through the Seoul music gaining them a steady legion of loyal fans.
Scarlett Woolfe
Embarking on a fearless exploration of uncharted territories, Scarlett Woolfe emerges as a 5-piece project, peeling back the layers to reveal the concealed narratives of women carrying profound and dark truths. With their distinct sound, the band beckons audiences into a captivating realm of haunting discoveries and dream-like euphoria. At the heart of their musical journey lies the poignant single ‘Poor Suzy’ a profound exploration of the trials endured by women grappling with abuse. The song masterfully employs metaphor, depicting abuse as a corrosive poison permeating the skin. Beyond a mere musical creation ‘Poor Suzy’ transforms into a heartfelt tribute, honouring Scarlett Woolfe's grandmothers, fellow survivors, and every woman confronting adversity.
Skydaddy
Skydaddy, the brainchild of Rachid Amado Fakhre, emerges as a captivating force on our 2024 Hype List. Originating from a moment of creative rebirth following a psychedelic odyssey at a music festival, Skydaddy's ethereal chamber pop is illuminated in the upcoming EP Pilot. Fakhre's introspective, warm ballads navigate a diverse range of genres, from art-rock to chamber folk, shaped by influences ranging from Randy Newman to Ry Cooder. The EP, marked by its personal unveiling through a passport photo cover, delves into Fakhre's transformative trip to Lebanon, capturing both the broken reality and resilient spirit of the country. Literary inspirations, such as Claude Lantier's tragic tale in Emilie Zola's L'Œuvre, infuse depth into tracks like 'His Masterpiece.' Collaborations with Tyler Hyde and insights into the London art-rock scene further enhance Skydaddy's unique identity.
Slumber
Based in the vibrant East End of London, Slumber exudes a refreshing style that sets them apart in the bustling post-punk scene. Instead of following the conventional path, the band draws inspiration from the melodic and playful sounds of 1990’s US indie music. While the melodies and sounds of 1990’s serve as a primary wellspring of creativity, Slumber proudly wears its anglophilic identity on it’s sleeve. Their lyrics beautifully weave together snapshots of modern-day London life, reflecting the joys, struggles and complexities faced by twenty-somethings in the sprawling metropolis.
Sol ChYld
If you're tired of woozy R&B and Neo-Soul ballads that go nowhere and mind-numbing trap tracks that have less to say than a Buddhist monk, then Sol ChYld needs to be on your radar. Her fiery and passionate delivery and witty lyricism were on full display on her 2023 standout record "Something Came To Me." She has shown her versatility and ability to craft thematic and heartfelt rap verses as well as soul ballads that hit at the heart of what can make these genres so great. Drawing inspiration from legendary rappers like Andre 3000 and Lil Wayne as well as contemporaries like JID and Saba, Sol ChYld is a breath of fresh air in today's Hip-Hop landscape and it feels like it's only a matter of time before Sol's introspective lyricism and melodic sensibilities propel her to superstardom.
Strawgirl
Inspired by the likes of PJ Harvey and 90s grunge and alternative rock, the London based band offer a blend of overdriven guitars and ethereal vocals, balancing softer, stripped-back verses with soaring powerful choruses to bring you to your feet and pump your fists in the air. After meeting and bonding over their mutual nostalgia for the 1990s and the bands they grew up listening to, Chris Lawrence (guitar), Sam Burgess (guitar), Phil Robinson (bass), Edie Fairservice (lead vocals, keyboard), and Karina McMahon (drums) founded Strawgirl.
Sulk
Sulk invites you to plunge into the unfiltered, raw energy that propels their music, promising a rollercoaster journey through the unexpected, unconventional, and downright rowdy. Hailing from London, the band creates a tongue-in-cheek, high-energy blend of punk, grunge, and shoegaze. Their debut single, 'Give It A Squeeze (Everybody Loves Me)' reflects singer Lily's personal experiences, offering a cathartic and humourous exploration of heartbreak and situationships. In a musical landscape often marked by seriousness, Sulk's ability to infuse their work with humour adds a unique and refreshing dimension to their artistry, making them stand out in the crowd.
Test Plan
Meet Test Plan, a dynamic DIY trio—Max, Mike, and Rory—based in London. Hailing from various corners of the world, including Bournemouth, Greece, and Dubai, the band crafts high-energy, scuzzy, and loud guitar music intentionally designed to capture the space between dancing and moshing. With their debut single ‘So Bored at Your Squat Rave’ Test Plan explores the concept of being caught in an exciting yet unfulfilling experience, reflecting themes of dissatisfaction and paranoia. The band's name, Test Plan, mirrors their constant experimentation with new ideas, symbolising their impatience and drive to move forward. Drawing from backgrounds in hardcore, metal, and indie music, the trio's individual journeys converge into a cohesive sound that resonates with angsty sweetness.
The New Eves
Probably top of everyone’s hype list for 2024 (ironically at the bottom of ours cause this is alphabetical), The New Eves, with their Avant-Folk debut single 'Original Sin' signify a transformative shift in music. Emerging from a jam session, the band discovered their unique sound, with ‘Mother’ serving as a pivotal moment that unveiled their collective voice. ‘Original Sin’ conceived during a stormy night on the beach, captures the essence of The New Eves. Pioneers of an innovative fusion of rustic folk, 60s garage, and Pagan-folk influences, the band delves into themes of girlhood, shame, and the connections between myth, the earth, and human experience.
