Gig Guide: September 2024

Gigs, gigs, gigs, but which one should you go to?

Gigs. You love em. We love em. And there’s a metric shit-ton of them in our treasured capital this month. So grab your earplugs and start practising your appreciative nodding, because here is the comprehensive list of the best gigs in London this sunny September.

The Big Ticket: Jamie XX - Alexandra Palace, 25-26 September - £44

Everyone’s favourite tousled haired electronic sad boy is taking over Alexandra Palace for two nights, coinciding with the release of his sophomore solo album 9 years in the making. Recent singles ‘Treat Each other Right’ and ‘Baddy on the Floor’, featuring the excellent Honey Dijon, sound like they’ll fit snugly in a set that is peppered with what we can now call‘modern classics’.

Although currently sold out, sticking yourself on the waitlist and keeping an eagle eye out in the approaching week should help you secure a ticket for what promises to be a fabulous night of melancholic soft boogying.

The Highlight Of The Month: William Tyler - ICA , 8 September - £24.21

Left your dancing pants on holiday? Don’t worry, who wants to dance when you can be transported to a sparse sandy road full of curious rocks and unsettling spectres. This comes courtesy of William Tyler, whose charming brand of ‘cosmic country’ has soundracked many a long and winding commute over the past 15 years. If you are after warm catharsis and a sense of fulfilment that lingers around for days after the event, this is the one for you.

Up and Comers

East London’s rising stars Human Interest have been building a reputation for ear catching indie that isn't afraid to pop in and out of the rabbit hole. Their headline show at The Lexington on 13 September follows the release of their latest EP, and if it shows even half the promise and ambition of their early work then it won't be long before they join contemporaries English Teacher and Divorce as leaders of the new indie pack. Catch them while you can.

Casting our eyes southward, cute-as-a-button five piece Rabbitfoot are placing the glacier cherry on their meteoric year with a debut headline show at The Windmill on 11 September. Having delighted crowds over the last six months with earthy and itchy songs that never fully settle, this event is a chance to celebrate and look forward to what is a very promising future for the band.

Freebies

Spent all your hard earned pennies on a nosebleed seat to watch two 50-something mancs glare each other into oblivion? There’s plenty of cracking shows in the capital this month to keep your appetite whetted without spending a dime. Highlights include some ‘janky sort of amateur math-rock or emo with a horn section’ courtesy of Leatherhead at The Shacklewell Arms on 19 September, topped with excellent support from Liv Wynter and Rael.

On the preceding Monday, The Sebright Arms welcome the charming chaos of Shtëpi, who have been making a name for themselves with support slots for The Lounge Society, Personal Trainer and Geese. With additional sets from brat punks Winnx and the softer sounds of Speedial, there’s few better ways to kick off a week.

Oh and obviously come to our free gig on the 4th of September at Sebright Arms Featuring the groovy-garage-rock rhythms of The Howling Fiends, grunge favourites Laughter, shoegaze outfit Dreamboy with their debut London show and crank(haha)-wavers Charlemagne from South London! Tickets available here.

The “F*ck It Why Not” Gig : Cannibal Corpse - Roundhouse, 29 September - £40.50

Missed out on Chappell Roan tickets? It’s okay, because Cannibal Corpse are coming to lay waste to the Roundhouse. Joined by the dulcet tones of Municipal Waste, Immolation and Schizophrenia, swap your lime-green crocs for metal studded steel cap boots and see your brat girl summer give way to sad stepdad autumn.

All together now: “Draining the snot, I rip out the eyes

Squeezing them in my hands, nerves are incised

Peeling the flesh off the bottom of my weapon

Involuntarily pulpifying facial regions”
