5 Artists That’ll Blow Your Mind At Field Day 2023
You’re going to want to see all of these.
We call on electronic music lovers, techno freaks, 24/7 ravers and anyone in between. On the 19th of August, we’ll be blessed. Field Day, a part of the All Points East festival, will take place in East London’s Victoria Park. Our senses and hearts will melt into one ecstatic mess very soon.
There’s no cooler way to celebrate the end of summer than among what you love the most: community, capital and the artists you’ve been obsessing over for the past year. It doesn’t really get better than this. When everything ground-breaking is served right in front of you, it’s hard to make a choice. That’s why, this year, we are here to help. Meet the performers that deserve your full attention. See you there!
Arca
All hail the queen, the mother, the goddess. Arca is everything and nobody would dare to disagree. Hitting hard with her experimental electronica, she’s at the forefront of the revolution. The Venezuelan musician/producer birthed 5 (!) Kick albums that tell a fierce story of beauty, pain, death and rebirth. Revoking old myths onto post-modern canvas, Arca always brings us to the brink of tears and ecstasy on the dancefloor.
Sudan Archives
Sudan Archives has a rare kind of talent. A multifaceted musician has taken many roles: a rapper, producer, singer, lyricist, and violinist. She’s exceptional in every one of them. The best known for the self-described, fiddle-punk sound, she’s mixing the beloved instrument with neo-folk, soul, ambient with anything she’s into at the moment. Natural Brown Prom Queen, an album released last year, Sudan Archives proposes avant-garde pop bursting with joy, personal musings on race, womanhood and relationships.
Actress
Darren J. Cunningham, aka Actress, is a British electronic musician with a hauntingly beautiful repertoire. After a career-ending injury stopped his football career, Actress swapped the ball for a turntable. Over the last ten years, he dreamt up a universe of his own populated by slow-burning yet never-timesome songs and unhinged melodies. Always eager to show others around, he collaborated with Sampha, Aura T-09, Mehdi Lacoste, Eddie Peake and many more. His last release, the 2020 album Karma & Desire, is a godsend for both heavens and hell.
Fever Ray
Karin Dreijer, better known as Fever Ray, an ex-member of their group, the Knife, is a true shapeshifter. Exploring the themes of identity, sexuality and belonging in their edgy electropop, they offer a personal perspective dressed in subversive beats. In 2023 with a new album, Radical Romantics, Fever Ray searches for love outside the common definitions. It feels somehow sensual but alien. Fever Ray’s masterful character creations, and ability to push boundaries like there’s no tomorrow, make them a whole artist. Expect the unexpected.
Aphex Twin
Aphex Twin is a modern myth and a post-ironic prankster who chewed almost every subgenre and served it to us as something completely bonkers. Both cult followers and mainstream enthusiasts have eaten it up and continue to do so. His idiosyncratic work in techno, ambient and jungle became a classic introduction to electronic circles. Despite now observing it all from a comfortable distance during his mid-career hiatus, Aphex Twin can be sporadically spotted on the decks. Don’t miss your chance.
